Music Video Video No. 9

Today we have a trio of various artists. The first artist is Kathleen York (aka Bird York) with her song In The Deep from the album Wicked Little High. Many people might recognize this song from the movie Crash. Then we have the video of Sting’s song Desert Rose. We close out today with a live performance of Sarah Brightman performing her cover of the Hooverphonic song Eden. This performance is from the 1998 Goldene Europa Award ceremony.

A new hosting day dawns

Due to expenses and performance issues, not to mention the massive outage and data loss that occurred in May of 2009, I have decided to move on to a new hosting solution for arfore.com and the other sites I host.

After doing some research into what others are using as well as the cost involved, I decided to migrate to AN Hosting.

AN Hosting got started as a two-person operation in 2001.  In 2005 they were bought up by Chicago, Illinois-based midPhase Hosting.  Their hosting plan was pretty reasonable.  It compares nicely with the cost of my MediaTemple (gs) account.  One of the great things about it was the cost.  Since AN Hosting plans are paid for in advance (either 12 or 24 month plans) you get the same services for less than half the cost of the MediaTemple account.

The control panel that AN Hosting uses doesn’t have quite the same visual polish that the MediaTemple Control Center has.  They both use CPanel, but the interface with MediaTemple is much slicker in comparison.  The only real gripe I have so far with the AN Hosting Cpanel is that I can no longer directly control all aspects of the DNS Zone files the way I could before.  You still have the ability to create MX records, but the other aspects of DNS are handled by the sysadmins.  This is a fairly small issue.

As I get further into the hosting I will write a fuller comparison of the systems and any potential shortcomings that I see.

Website outage

Due to a problem with the grid-cluster at MediaTemple, the site was down for well over a day.  They still don’t have everything up and running 100% yet, so their are at least two posts that are missing images.

Hopefully they will get everything finished today.  According to the latest update on the status entry for Incident 754, they have approximately 155 sites to restore out of the almost 2500 that were hosted on gs cluster 2.  Fortunately this didn not affect the database cluster, so none of my actually posts, pages or comments were lost.

The affected content at the moment is:

Mac OS X 10.5 – arfore dot com

When doing system administration it is often more convenient to connect to a server through some sort of remote connection setup rather than having to sit at a console in a datacenter.  The comfort of one’s office (or living-room) is often far superior in terms of noise and temperature than the environs of the datacenter […]

One of the standard methods of configuring Mac OS X in the enterprise has become known as the magic triangle or golden triangle. This is generally described as a setup involving Active Directory (AD) for authentication of the clients and services and Open Directory (OD) for managing the client preferences.  The triangle comes from the […]

At work I am in charge of running our Macromedia Adobe Contribute Publishing Server. Since I like to duplicate my work environment on my laptop for local development, I needed to install JBoss 4.0.5.GA.  I won’t go into why we are running such an old version, that’s all Adobe’s fault.

In the application selection process for 10.5, the X11 maintainers elected not to include Xnest. While most users will probably not need this, since you can export X11 application through a SSH connection, sometimes it is quite handy to have the entire gui session available from a remote server.

I use this when managing some of my […]

Making Simple Tags work with WordPress 2.9

For some of you that have just upgraded to the shiny new WordPress 2.9 release, you may have noticed a nasty little message that states that Simple Tags won’t work with the version of WordPress that you now have installed.

The issue at hand here is that the code for the plug-in contains a hard-coded check for the version number to ensure compatibility. It doesn’t appear on the surface that there will be any issues with this plug-in and the new WP code.

The fix to this is pretty simple. On line 35 of the simple-tags.php file you will find the following code:

35
if ( strpos($wp_version, '2.7') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.8') !== false )

All you need to do is to change the code to include an additional check for version 2.9. The code will then look like so:

35
if ( strpos($wp_version, '2.7') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.8') !== false || strpos($wp_version, '2.9') !== false )

Note: if there are any issues with the rest of the code, then the plugin still won’t work properly, but there doesn’t appear to be any that have been found.

Music Video Friday No. 4

Today’s video is a collage of various scenes from a whole slew of anime shows. If you watch it closely you will see some scenes from Akira, Wolf’s Rain and Witch Hunter Robin, to name just a few.

The music used is Best of You by the Foo Fighters. This song appeared on the album Skin and Bones, which was released on Rosewell/RCA label on 2006-11-07.
