So when I moved into my new apartment last month, I decided to switch away from Mediacom Cable Internet to BellSouth DSL.
The main reason was that I had experienced unstable service in the past with Mediacom and I decided I also wanted a phone that could work when the power was out (not that it happens that often, but you never know).
One unintended side effect was that unlike Mediacom, BellSouth doesn’t allow you to send out mail using a third-party SMTP server over port 25. Since this is also the case at my job, I decided to search for a solution to this.
Of course, some people would say “just setup SMTP auth over SSL on your server.” While that was a possibility, since I am not the only person on that particular server, I decided to not jeporadize the other users by monkeying with the mail subsystems.
